Filippo Juvarra was recognized in his lifetime as one of the most gifted architects and imaginative draftsmen of his generation, in demand all over Europe. He was active as a stage designer and an illustrator, and also executed ornamental drawings for furniture, gardens and fountains. He was buried in St Peter's near the part of the church (Cappella Gregoriana) erected under his pontificate and the monument was topped by a coat of arms, which Filippo Juvarra included in his book on the coats of arms of the popes (in the drawing the dragon is looking to the right, while in the actual monument it is looking to the left.
